Hi Tina!
Let me give you the low down on ghee. a) it removes toxins b) it's cooling for pitta - for mind and body c) it increases agni (digestive fire) so that it burns off toxins while promoting healthy digestion and d) gives peace of mind (<a href="http://heymonicab.com/2009/06/mind-rules-body/" rel="nofollow">sattvic</a>). That's why ghee is sooo great for pitta and especially during a cleanse - it cleanses while cooling AND increasing fire (oxymoron and magical!). Coconut oil is definitely cooling/balancing for pitta but it does not remove toxins and it does not increase agni. Both of those are necessary for a proper cleanse. Mmmm...does this help answer your question? If you can, please use ghee. If you are against animal products let me know and I'll find out what else you could use.

Hi Monica

Can I use coconut oil instead of ghee in my kitchari cleanse?

I am high pitta and would prefer not to use animal Ghee and love coconut so if this would work I'd love to know.

Thanks

Well honestly, it's not the same as ghee so no it won't have the exact same energy. It is lubricating for your body, but doesn't have the "magic" agni increasing qualities that ghee does. I am also unsure if it has cooling/calming qualities for pitta like ghee does. Like any substitute, it comes very close to the real thing, but it's not because it's made of different things. However, Earth Balance came recommended from the Ayurvedic doctor that I went to India with. His family eats that instead of ghee and they are Ayurvedic/vegan. So...there ya go. :)

Does Earth Balance have the same energetic and balancing benefits as Ghee? I use earth balance for baking all the time and it would be super easy for me to supplement it in for Ghee :) Thank you for the quick reply!

Is there anything that can replace Ghee for those who prefer to follow a vegan lifestyle?
