Kapalbhati Pranayam

Kapawhat?! Kapal-bah tee. It’s a breathing exercise (pranayam) that is literally translated to “glowing” or “shining” skull. Dude, it’s the BEST because it purifies the mind by forcefully ridding all toxins. The breathing itself is a series of forceful exhalations one after the other while never intentionally inhaling. The body will automatically inhale for us – we don’t need to worry about it.

We have all heard of laughter being the best medicine. Kapalbhati works the same way. Think about laughing, “ha-ha-ha.” The whole time it’s exhale-exhale-exhale. During laughter and kapalbhati we are exhaling and ridding the body of toxins, while bringing in a lot of fresh oxygen. Ok lemme tell ya more, it gets better!

Benefits of kapalbhati:

Totally purifying.
Good for weight loss. It’s a cardio work out.
10 minutes of kapalbhati is equal to 1 hour of cardio workout, like running. No kidding! But you have to work up to it just like regular cardio.
Strengthens Respiratory System. Strengthening lungs, lung capacity, purifies nasal passage, and removes blockages in the chest.
Strengthens & stimulates Digestive System. Remember, “We are what we digest” so we need to digest food properly. This will help!

You can also follow instructions below:
1. Do this daily in the morning if you can, before breakfast (2 hours if after meal. You will get a cramp otherwise. Trust me.)
2. Start with a count of 20-30, then rest. See how you feel. This is very individual depending on your cardiovascular condition, so take it easy if you haven’t done exercise in a while. Or if that was a piece of cake, then try for 45 seconds or one minute.
3. Sit with legs crossed in a lotus-like position or if in a chair, both feet on the ground
4. Spine straight, chest open, like a string is going from your butt up through the top of your head and holding you straight
5. Using on the the diaphragm, inhale while ballooning the belly
6. Start! Forcefully exhale, using the diaphragm and count, 1-2-3-4-5 (you will automatically inhale, but focus on the exhale)
7. Take a rest when you are tired and repeat 3x. Even with just 2 minutes of this a day, you will notice the benefits.

    Last 2 months he I am doing Some stretches and then pranayam including 900 repetitions of Kapalbhati. I have learnt pranayam 30 years ago. I have done it many times before. I do not feel exhausted or any thing. Some times my hands become warm. But, I never sweat. I have high BP. I want to get rid of BP pill. Will pranayam help?
    My pranayam ritual is as follows.
    10 deep breaths. 900 kapalbhati. Anter pranayam 5 times Bahya pranayam 5 times. Bramari 5 times.anulom vil on 21 times. Onkar japa 21 times.
    I also take 10000 steps daily.

    Oxygen is a life for human beings and it prevents diseases as well cure them!
    Kapalbhati provided more oxygen with a positive action of abdominal muscles. Therefore I believe that Kapabhati is even better than hyperbaric chamber.

This makes our cells very health and this is the secret of recovery of most of the diseases by this exercise.Abdominal muscles movement during Kapalbhati provide our body with a movement of blood and lymphatic fluid from the pelvic and our legs resulting in getting rid of excess fluids from our pelvic and lower extremities. This is how it heals our varicose veins and peripheral diabetic ulcers!
      We have nothing to lose by Kapalbhati.

    Hi Monica,

    On June 18th 2016 I has been diagnosed type 2 diabetes with FBS 288 and PPBS 434 .My age is 28 years.With in 20 days My blood readings came to normal i.e., 77 and 136with insulin dose 15 units insulin before breakfast,500mg metformin tablet after lunch and 10 units insulin before dinner.I reduced my insulin level 10 units morning before breakfast,tab continued,8 units before dinner.Again after 15 days(July 22nd) readings were 71 and 89.My doctor told to come on tablet 1gm metformin only. I continued till 20 days(14th August) and my self lowered to 500 mg as my readings were normal.Recently when I checked i.e., on August 24th I found readings 93 and 118 which are absolutely normal in range.Altogeather with in 2 months My blood sugar is normal.Since 10 days iam doing kapalbhati 7-8 mins mandukasan 8 mins and three other diabetic realted aasanas overall half an hour yoga I am doing.From the time I got diagnosed I am regularly doing 15 min walk after lunch and dinner.Morning I use to push ups 4 sets min 100 and max 140 with in 15 mins.My goal is to become 100 percent free medication and diabetics free.Is it possible in my case.Also results are very good in my case when compared to general diagnosed person.Please help me out from this I want to live normal as I was earlier.

      It will be helpful getting rid of weight but pranayam is not enough it will be helpful but only when you take a proper diet get a balanced diet eat less burn more calories sure you will lose weight And do regular pranayam it will work

    I have just started doing Kapalbhati a few days back. For the first three days, I got around 10 coughs immediately after doing it. Now, I am getting around 3 to 4 sneezes and mucus after doing this breathing excercise. I am confused if this a good sign or a bad sign. Please help.

      Pranayam does not have side effect it is a natural excersise all though it may be cleaning your cough which is in excess amount in your respiratory system be relaxed continue it it will be helpful in coming days

    hi Monika – i m a patient of thyroid and 36 yes old and weigh 73 kgs. I have started doing kapalbhati for 20 mins a day. i have stopped eating junk food but do have my cheat days. i have been doing it for a month now. i dont seem to loose weight. cause i m a high BP patient i do it slowly. i know its too soon but when can i expect to loose weight. pls asvise. i only do kapalbhati cause of my hectic schedule.

      Hi.. I am doing kapalbhati for half an hour daily for last one month . I am suffering from constipation but have not seen any good results till now.. I am not able to do early in the morning.. I do around 9.30 to 10 in morning after clearing bowel.. How much time it will take to show good results.. Should I wake early and do it will it more effective.. And I take 2 glass of warm water and tea before doing pranayam.. Please if I need to do any corrections.. Do tell me..

      It will work yoga is a natural process it will take time at least 6-8 months to get result but be sure that ur diet plan is good if u do anything but ur diet is not blanced it has no effect so maintain the diet and effects will be seen

    Can you do Kapalbhati by itself or this has to be done with other pranayams? How long one should do this? Do you do three rounds of X mins each and if yes what is the duration of each round. If one can tolerate, can you do it continuously for 10-15 mins? Please talk about timing and frequency in little more detail to get the benefits.

    dear i am doing kapalbhati last five years my view when any one doing this exercise he should sit and close u r eyes and mind and face should be no tension u should kept u mind on Moladar chakra( start kapalbhati and slowly continue) and as per u r Dharam/cast u should say Om or waheguru inside but not speak from mouth(sliently) from moladar chakra u should slowly come up from inside on staying each chakra and finally come on u last chakra (in front of forhead chakra (lady bindi point) and stay their u kapalbhati should be continuously and slowly as per u r yoga trainer u should not existed u r self and alom vilom is also equally very important and also u can take OM or waheguru name while doing this exercise atleast while both exercise take name of OM or waheguru and think my all illness are coming out and i am 100 % fit u see this withing very few DAYS U MIXIMUM SICKNESS WILL GO OUT god bless u

    Thanks Monika for nice article.. It is really useful and inspiring.I do understand that KAPALBHATI should be started slow by beginners and then one should reach to doing it for 10 mins..
    But my query is what is max duration for which kapalbhati can be done. i saw someone wrote above doing it for 45 mins…doing it in parts(20 mins, 15 mins, 15 mins) throughout the day? according to you what is max duration for 1 day!!

      Hm! I don’t know that I have the answer. It’s a cardio workout so I imagine if you do too much of it you can stress the body and also begin to wear it down. I would think if a regular person did it for 10 minutes in the morning and 10 in the afternoon, that would be plenty! I’m afraid though that I don’t have a solid answer :/

      According to Baba Ramdev, one can do 30 minutes of kapalbhati pranayama each in the morning and evening for better results. But care shupould be taken not to rush to do it continuously, and take breaks where required. You can add 10 or 20 counts of Anulom Vilom Pranayama in between.

        You don’t have to wait AFTER the exercise, but definitely don’t eat BEFORE the exercise! If you are hungry right after, that’s a good sign because it means you’ve done a good job of stoking your agni :) But yes, otherwise empty stomach to do the exercise, morning before breakfast is best. Or you can do afternoon once lunch has digested. Does this help?

      PLEASE STOP Kapalbhati! You know your body/life WAY more than I do and kapalbhati is not for everyone. You know what feels right and what doesn’t – no matter what, in Ayurveda, if it doesn’t feel good then don’t do it! PLEASE listen to your body and make good decisions for yourself. You don’t need my help at all, you just need to ABIDE to what the SELF is telling you.

      Well, unfortunately heart problems are a bit much for me to answer in a post. Please follow what your physician advises. Kapalbhati and bhastrika are intense and may be too much for the heart, but I cannot advise either way. It would be irresponsible of me to give suggestions – thank you for understanding!!

      Best to do kapalbhati in the morning or in the afternoon when you need a pick-me-up. Doing it at night is not the best time…but if you must then make sure it’s not right before bed or on a full stomach.

      Hi Sam! Make sure you are not eating too much too late at night – that’s one of the main causes of weight gain. Biggest meal should be at Noon. However…congratulations on reaping all the other benefits of kapalbhati!! :)

      Hi Bhawana, Unfortunately I can’t be specific about your weight loss because I don’t know you as a person. And Ayurveda treats the person, not the problem. Overall I would say, get moving every day and eat less food. That will go far!!

      Hi Jenny, see my response to Rocky. And most importantly start slow! If you get light-headed, it’s time to rest – Just like any other cardio workout. Start slow and build up over time.

      Hi Rocky! Thanks for asking. One of the rules of learning Ayurveda (especially since passed down by word of mouth thousands of years ago), is to, “Trust the authorities.” I got the information from one of the teachers/doctors who had been healing with Ayurveda for 40 years. So, as Ayurveda says, I trusted my authority. I would love to say, “Why, I read it in the ancient texts, Charaka Samhita, of course!” But I have not made my way through that (yet!). But here’s what I do know. If you do kapalbhati, you have to start out slow and work up to longer duration. Your heart races and you will sweat – beads of sweat (nose, back of knees, and inner elbows), after just a short amount of time. If anyone tried to do 10 minutes straight without proper “conditioning” you could do serious harm. So please treat it as if it’s a strenuous workout and only do small durations at first, build slowly over time. Does this help at all???

        Kapalabhati should get you to your healthy weight. I do not believe (although all people are different) that it will create an undesired weight loss. My guess is the weight you lost is what needed to come off. That help?

    I had been following yoga for few months and had to discontinue due to discomfort in sitting posture.
    I am 25 and suffering from disc bulge in L4 L5 and S1 since 6 years now
    My upper back, neck, lower back, thigh nerves connection towards the knees, all hurt alot.My shoulder blades and not behind.I couldnt sit in a proper posture due to nerves compression my back and legs start paining.
    Please suggest me a solution to this
    As i’m a die hard fan of our Yoga, but couldn’t do it since ages

    Hello Monica, I had a heart attack 9 years ago and have suffered with heartburn for 30 years. I have 4 sents in my heart. Chest pain is always a confusing issue. Three weeks ago, I started Kapalbhati and Anulom Vilom and now I am doing them 7 minutes each before breakfast and 3 minutes each before lunch. I would like to know what is the mechanism for these two pranayam to help reduce cholesterol and help with acidity. I must say that the heartburn symptoms have drastically improved within such short period; nevertheless, I am curious to know the science behind the benefits particularly how or why does kapalbhati help with atherosclerosis and arterial deposits.       Hi Kapil! I’m sorry to hear about your heart attack and heartburn. Because I am Ayurvedically trained (diet and lifestyle) and not medically trained, I am not qualified to answer these types of questions. What I know is that kapalbhati opens channels and increases digestive fire which helps the entire body work more in harmony. As far as heart specifics, I really cannot answer that because it’s beyond my knowledge at this time. Thanks for understanding and I hope you keep improving!!

    I like qigong, but a lot of it is really faith. But I can feel the qi energy, it’s very real. I know If I do yoga every day smothing really amazing is going to happen,and it has.I now have back pain and can’t do the asana I want too but yoga is so much more and most people don’t have a clue.

    hi..this is one of the best yoga techniques u can get …i have been doing this…my skin glows a lot..i lost 1 and a half kg after doing 400 kapalbhatis everyday..morning alaong with aurya namaskar…it really freshens ur mind and thw whole day ur body feels lighter and energetic…yoga really makes u love ur body more…

    Oh I am definitely already running — I’m a reservist in the USAF and have to run for my fit test. I’ll keep you posted on my results — I’m up to 10 mins a day and really forceful exhales, many times before I have to stop and inhale in deeply again .. no weight loss yet but it hasn’t been that long… thanks for the encouragement!!

      You’re welcome Carol! It will definitely help – stay consistent and remember to increase the duration as you go. Also, a fun thing to try is after a couple weeks of practicing, do some cardio (even just run a couple blocks) as a test. I think you will notice your capacity for cardio will be much higher. At least with myself, I notice that I am not out of breath, my lungs feel clear, I don’t get the “chest burn” and my body carries much easier. Like magic! Enjoy this!! xo

    I’ve been doing this for about a week — my hands get hot and tingly — does that mean its working? Also, is it better to keep your eyes open or closed; does it matter? Thanks!

      Hi Carol! YES! Hot and tingly hands is a good sign! Some people might feel it in the inner crease in the elbow, or behind the knees or back of the neck too. You are moving the energy through your body, increasing circulation and strengthening your heart! AND clearing your mind. Keep it up! Eyes…can do either really but I do mine closed. :) Good job!

    Hey monica…i do kapalbhati pranayam and anulom vilom for 20 minutes each first thing in the morning, then 15 minutes 2 hours after lunch and for 10 minutes 2 hours after dinner…is it safe to do kapalbhati more then 20 minutes? or 20 minutes is more then enough everyday? please advise me…also please let me know which are the best pastures for conception for pcos women…i am not able to do head stand, plough pose and shoulder stand…those make me dizzy…looking forward to here from u soon…thanks for your help

      Hey Jyoti! You are doing enough pranayam for the day. If you add it all up, you are doing 45 minutes a day which is more than plenty. As for your other question, what about bridge pose?

    Can You please answer my queries?

    1) Is it true that its necessary to do other exercises as well (along with this particular pranyama) for hormones balance which will help you to lose weight faster?

    2) What should be duration for doing this Pranyama to effectively lose weight?
    Also please tell me the diet to be followed for losing weight while doing kapalbhati ?

    3) I completely trust this breathing exercise. Its just that I want to know more about this?

      Hi Shubha…well remember in Ayurveda every body is different. Also, this is not a “miracle” cure. Diet, lifestyle management, daily routine, and stress management all have to do with maintaining good health. I would say, start slowly like the instructions say. If you have never done it before and try for 10 minutes, you might pass out. So! Go slowly to work up to 10 minutes and do it daily – it’s awesome!!

      Hi Surya, it will start around your belly but since the whole body is working it should help other parts too. Remember, the body is a whole. What you do to one part, affects the whole thing :)

    Hi, I learned Kapalbhati in India at Baba Ramdev’s week camp and not only I lost weight (3-4 Lbs. in a week) but also my hypothyroid went down from 100 mcg to 88 mcg. I taught to my daughter with Bronchitis problem and today she is very healthy infact last year she did not took a single dose of medicine .

      How long (as in minutes as well as the number of times) were your sessions per day at Baba Ramdev’s camp?
      I started kapal bhati with 1 minute per day, (twice a day) and have gradually increased it to now 18 minutes per session twice a day. Although I have not lost too much weight, I feel very good and am determined to increase my sessions to 25 minutes each, god willing. I am losing more from my backside, but I feel my stomach is gradually decreasing as well.
      The best trick is to start slowly, and increase gradually, as it is very difficult to do.
      I am always watching the clock. If anybody has suggestions regarding this, please let me know. I would really appreciate that. Thx in advance.
