What About Sprouts?

Recently I got a question from one of you pittas about sprouts and sprouted bread. Sprouts in general are in pitta phase of life so they increase pitta. They are not a seed (kapha), nor are they yet a plant (vata). So sprouts or sprouted seeds of any kind are stuck in puberty! They can create digestive problems (bloating, gas, constipation, diarrhea, cramps) and skin problems too! You would be better off having a nice healthy grained bread or any grains (all good for pitta) without the sprouts. :)

Hm…so I’m guessing all those raw products out there, including protein powders, mixes, and the like, aren’t good for pitta either? Would these be imbalancing to all doshas or would they be mostly beneficial for pure kaphas?

    • Monica says:

Hi Jess, raw isn’t terrible for pitta so long as your agni (digestive fire) is strong enough to digest it. Ideally though veggies should be cooked/steamed (not to death so the nutrients go away) to make digestion easier. Protein powders…I don’t even know what’s in those. If a food has a very long ingredients list, I would steer clear because it’s not “real” food – it’s likely highly processed. Sprouts are irritating to all doshas because they are “stuck” in puberty. Best is to make a different choice.

So, would the high pitta energy make them a good choice for kaphas and vatas?

    • Monica says:

Hi Babita, not really because they aren’t a “complete” food yet. Any food that is incomplete (whether under ripe or over ripe) is not going to be harmonious for us.
