What is Ayurveda?
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda (eye-your-VAY-duh) is a 5,000 year old Indian holistic healing science that literally translates to “science of life” or “knowledge of life.” I don’t know why it’s taken us this long to rediscover it. We all should use it to our advantage — it’s amazing! Think of Ayurveda as individualized health care, or life management, focusing on achieving balance of the whole individual including the mind, physical body and our unique spirit. More than yoga (which is Ayurveda’s sister) asanas, Ayurveda is the umbrella over all aspects of life. By understanding the doshas (what is a dosha? vata, pitta, kapha), we can create a customized ayurvedic lifestyle based on who we are. Nutrition, yoga/exercise, daily routine, stress management, pranayama and meditation are all folded in as disease prevention. In addition, Ayurvedic therapies, herbs, and lifestyle changes will help unravel any current imbalances. They all work together to prevent us from getting sick and feeling junky. And if we happen to get sick and feel junky, Ayurveda can help us with that too.
Now, we live quite differently than we did 5,000 years ago, right? *Rubbing my hands together* Let’s make this modern Ayurveda! You know, using it to live how we live today with our fast pace, changing technologies, traffic jams, high stresses and you know the rest! If there was a time in the world where we need a connection to nature and a reason to honor our individuality, it’s now. Have fun learning all there is in the expansive, wonderful world of Ayurveda.
